Olivia Camfield
Olivia Camfield is an interdisciplinary artist of the Muscogee Nation, born and raised in the Texas Hill Country, currently based in Portland OR and pursuing their MFA at Bard College. Their work explores themes of gore, harsh revenge, Alien as kin, time traveling relatives, Mvskoke lifeways in experimental forms, and frames-as-patterns. Through film, dance, and tattoo, they engage with Indigenous cosmologies and the physicality of movement as an offering and prayer. Their dance traditions honor effort itself as a blessing and reflect how they make films by applying concepts of phrase creation from modern and concert dance to guide their practice... Mvskoke tattoos translated to dance, movement phrase work translated into an editing practice, and layered imagery in film translated into contemporary choreography inform their experiments from one medium to another. Currently, Olivia is working towards creating Indigenous movement modules (new and culturally specific components to be replicated between works) that serve as building blocks for narrative phrases and develop movement principles that resonate with the body’s needs. Olivia's films have screened internationally at Camden International Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, ImagineNATIVE Film, and Media Arts Festival and have appeared in print and online publications including ArtForum and Variety. Olivia was a 2018-2019 Alembic Artist in Residence, a CYCLE I featured artist of COUSIN Collective, a 2022 Sundance Institute Indigenous Non-Fiction Intensive participant, and a 2022 NACF LIFT awardee.
